At the Little London Music School, our program has been developed to address key skills relevant to specific age groups

Overview

Classes at The Little London School of Music are structured in two halves to keep our students engaged and interested. Each class is accompanied by a classical instrumentalist, giving students exposure to a wide range of musical textures. In all age groups, children are accompanied by a family member or adult, who is actively encouraged to participate and interact.

We incorporate a mixture of familiar songs, traditional English, classical and foreign language nursery rhymes, and new repertoire each week. Actions, movement and various percussive instruments add further challenges and fun. This learning environment fosters a valuable appreciation and understanding of music that our students carry with them for life.
Throughout the term, we are joined by special guests from the orchestra where our students have the opportunity to explore and interact with instruments ranging from the 'cello to the flute and the trombone.

18 months + Toddler Music

At this age, children start trying to repeat back musical phrases, show physical responses to music and can clearly differentiate between tempos, intonations, rhythms and other musical concepts.

  • Group sing-a-long to familiar lullabies, finger play songs and other simple tunes. 
  • Moving and using actions in time with the music, 
  • Singing in a round or two parts
  • Encourage children to differentiate between 'high' and 'low' musical pitches
  • Coordination of their bodies in time to the music
  • Independent use of drums, castanets and maracas
  • Keeping time in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 
  • Introduction to the orchestra through different instruments

CURRICULUM 

6 - 17 months - Baby Music

By 6 months, babies are already responding to music at a basic level. We encourage further musical development through exposing babies to melodies and rhythms of varying musical styles with strong parent/adult interaction.

  • Active listening, shaking maracas and bells along with the music
  • Musical pulse, drumming on objects with the help of accompanying adults
  • Basic rhythm, beating a simple 4/4 and 3/4 times
  • Movement to the music
  • Development of language through the imitation of vowel and plosive sounds
  • Introducing 'loud' and 'soft', 'high' and 'low', 'slow and 'fast' sounds.


2.5 - 5 years Preschool Music

In these classes, we focus on building skills necessary to begin learning instruments and reading music, nurturing students self confidence. 

  • Listening to, echoing and composing rhythmic patterns.
  • Solfege notation and signage (do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti)
  • Identifying different chords and intervals
  • Reading Musical Notation 
  • Hand eye coordination
  • Singing in tune
  • Preparation for learning an instrument

Selecting your class

Baby Music Classes are tailored for babies from 6 months up. They allow children to move and explore as they are learning to sit, crawl and find their feet, all the while engaging with their parent or nanny and the music.

Toddler Music Classes have a minimum age requirement of 18 months by the first day of term, and children need to be walking confidently, unaided. These classes are designed to be active, to keep busy toddlers engaged, but require children to be seated during songs with instruments. 

The Beginner Pre-school Class is best suited to 2 year olds who have been attending classes for some time, who are in need of a little challenge but don't make the pre-school age requirement. This class also works well for children who are 2.5-3 years who are new to our classes.

Pre-school Classes have a minimum age requirement of 2 years and 6 months by the first day of term. Best suited to children aged 2.5 to 4 years, children are expected to count and sing along.

In Preschool PLUS Classes, we require children to be 3 years on or by the first day of term. This class is best suited to children 3 to 4.5 years, who have worked their way up through our syllabus.


So how to choose?
Whilst we spend a fair amount of time seated in classes, we understand that little ones naturally want to explore. We ask parents and adults to actively participate with their child, and lead by example. If you are joining us for the first time, it can be helpful to start with a younger class to settle in to the structure and learn the songs.  Some of the elements in the Pre-school Syllabus are quite tricky, even for adults, and the last thing we want is to cause frustration. We want our classes to be as enjoyable as possible for your little ones, and to give them a chance to take it all in, there is no rush to move on to the next class. Please do feel free to call or email with any questions regarding enrolment.
Our teachers are also always happy to discuss the right time for your child to move up to the next class. We will facilitate moves part way through a term if possible.
